COVID19 Updates March 18th Press Release from Daisy Wai MPP office
COVID19 Updates March 18th Press Release fromDaisy Wai’s MPP office - Here is the next set of updates regarding government procedures, and future plans, specifically regarding how we continue to deal with the COVID19 pandemic.
Contact Management In Schools:
• The health and well-being of Ontarians, including students and school staff, is Ontario’s top priority.
• Students, parents and school communities should rest assured that we are working together in close cooperation with partners in both the education and health care sectors to ensure the continued safety of students and staff.
• In the course of case and contact management, public health units can contact employers, schools, restaurants and places of business.
• This is a completely normal part of Ontario’s response to COVID-19, and it means our system is working.
Cancellation Of Standardized Testing:
• During the COVID-19 global pandemic, students are facing immense pressures in their academic journey.
• Given these extraordinary circumstances, our government is taking immediate action to continue protecting the health and safety as well as reduce the burden on students.
•Over the past days, the Ministry of Education has consulted with parents, students, educators, and administrators, on the future of standardized testing for elementary and secondary students.
• Following our consultation, and as part of our plan to protect students and staff, all remaining standardized tests for the 2019-2020 school year have been cancelled.
• This was communicated with Directors of Education across the province and we received welcomed feedback from the sector on the decision.
• This cancellation will not impede student graduation.
Transparency:
• Since learning of the COVID-19 virus our government has taken every step to be as transparent and open with the public as possible.
•We’ve held regularized media tech briefings, had daily website updates and offered multiple briefings to members opposite.
•This is a situation that’s constantly changing and to ensure continued transparency, we are providing updates on the website as early as possible.
•There are some situations where all details aren’t yet captured and as such, certain items will display as “pending”.
•Local Public Health Units have been doing a fantastic job and are working diligently to gather pertinent information in relation to every case.
Fiscal Support For Parents & Guardians:
•Our government made clear our commitment to protecting workers jobs and ensuring the necessary resources are in place to protect the health of the people of Ontario.
• We will be bringing forward legislation, in collaboration with the official opposition, that will protect workers who may need to take an unpaid leave or be away for childcare purposes and will ensure sick notes are no longer required.
• On March 25 Minister Phillips will release an Economic and Fiscal Update, a one-year plan that reflects the current environment and the action our government is taking.
• Our approach will include increased resources for our healthcare system, direct support for people, and action to protect jobs and our economy.
First Confirmed Death From COVID19 In Ontario
• We extend our heartfelt condolences to the friends, family and loved ones of this individual.
•This death is further evidence of the increasing seriousness of the situation we are in, which is why the province has been taking decisive steps to manage the spread of COVID-19 in Ontario.
• That’s why we’ve enacted a declaration of emergency closing all facilities providing indoor recreational programs, public libraries, private schools, licensed child care centres, theatres, cinemas, concert venues and bars and restaurants, except to the extent that such facilities provide takeout food and delivery.
• These closures are effective immediately.
• The declaration also prohibits organized public events of over 50 people, including parades and events and communal services within places of worship until March 31st. It is now more important than ever that we all take steps to reduce opportunities for transmission.
• In the coming days, Ontario will face challenging times. We must come together as a province and every Ontarian must support each other.
•Our government is prepared to do whatever it takes to guide our province through this difficult time.
