FCCM (Federation of Chinese Canadians in Markham) celebrates Lunar New Year and Markham’s First Ever “Chinese Heritage Month”
Markham, ON – February 12, 2024 – On February 10, Chairman Dr. Ken Ng, Federation of Chinese Canadians in Markham (FCCM) and Mayor Frank Scarpitti joined the community at Markham Civic Centre to usher in the Year of the Dragon. Lion dance, visit from the God of Fortune, paper cutting, traditional dancer, singing, Chinese instruments performances, and demonstrations by Chinese Calligrapher Billy Liu were among the festivities that were enjoyed by all.
Dignitaries attending include Hon. Helena Jaczek, MP for Markham-Stouffville: Paul Chiang, MP for Markham-Unionville; Markham Deputy Mayor Michael Chan, Markham Regional Councillors Jim Jones and Alan Ho; Markham Councillors Reid McAlpine, Amanda Yeung Collucci (Ward 6) and Ritch Lau (Ward 2); Ron Lynn, Chair, York Region District School Board as well as community leaders. Hon. Mary Ng, MP for Markham-Thornhill was represented by Wendy Shum.
Mayor Scarpitti thanked the Chinese Canadians for the significant social and economic contributions that they have made to Canada, and was proud that earlier this month, Markham Council officially proclaimed February as “Chinese Heritage Month”.
Dr. Ken Ng thanked the community and sponsors such as TD Canada Trust and NOIC Academy for their continued support to FCCM and the promotion of multiculturism. Dr. Ng also announced that a new “Health Guide” is being developed and will be released in the coming months. The “Health Guide” provides essential health care information which will particularly benefit seniors and newcomers.
FCCM is hosting two more Lunar New Year celebrations: February 18th, 1PM to 3PM at Promenade Mall, Vaughan and February 25, 2PM to 4PM at FCCM Chinese Culture Centre, King Square Shopping Centre, Unit 327, Markham. Admission is free. All are welcome.
