Ward 3 Drive-thru Food Drive
In light of the significant increase of food bank visits during the COVID-19 pandemic, Neighbourhood Watch groups in Ward 3 and I will host a contactless, drive-thru food drive on Sunday, July 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rouge Woods Community Centre parking lot located at 110 Shirley Drive. Residents are encouraged to participate by leaving food items in their trunks and our volunteers will unload them for you. Our goal is to collect 500 lbs of food.
Urgently needed items include boxed cereal, canned fruit, canned tomatoes, canned beans, tinned stew, canned meat and fish, canned vegetables, peanut butter, jam, instant coffee, tea, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap and toilet paper. We look forward to seeing you there!
Speed limit study results
City Staff has completed requests from residents to look into speed reduction on various roads. Following field investigations and application of engineering principles in accordance with TAC Guidelines, Staff has recommended that the posted speed on the subject roads be reduced from 50 km/h to 40 km/h.
Introducing a 40 km/h speed limit along with the rotational speed watch program will be effective in reducing motorists’ speeds and will enhance safety and efficiency of the roads. The following are the roads recommended for speed limit reductions in Ward 3:
- Forest Ridge Road (Bayview Avenue to easterly limit of Forest Ridge Road)
- Greenhill Avenue (Leslie Street to Clarendon Drive)
- Princeton Avenue (Leslie Street to Redstone Road)
- Toporowski Avenue (Leslie Street to Melbourne Drive)
Traffic calming in our neighborhood
Many traffic complaints, which include speeding, dangerous driving, and failing to stop at a stop sign are reported on a daily basis. Residents have requested implementation of traffic calming measures such as speed bumps to slow down traffic. Although speed bumps are effective in keeping vehicle speeds down, their use is sometimes controversial as they can increase traffic noise, potentially damage cars, and slow emergency vehicles. I am in the process of asking staff to develop a speed management strategy to assess some measures that can be implemented to make the roads safer in our community.
You may have noticed a new lawn sign in our neighborhood. Together with the help of our Neighborhood Watch Captains, I launched this initiative with the aim at getting drivers to slow down and drive safely in our community. If you are interested in getting a free sign to support this initiative, please register at www.castroliu.com/slow-down

Age-Friendly Community
Richmond Hill is taking steps toward becoming an Age-Friendly Community. This type of community allows people of all ages to participate in activities that keep everyone healthy and included in community life.
Our Age-Friendly Community Initiative is a project under Richmond Hill’s Council Strategic Priority: Strong Sense of Belonging.
We want to learn more about what we are doing right, and where there are opportunities for growth as an age-friendly city. We want to hear from everyone, but especially older adults: those 55 years of age and older.
You can provide your comments and ideas in a number of different ways, including an online survey, virtual roundtable discussions and telephone interviews.
