Statement from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on Vesak
Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Vesak:
“Every year, millions of Buddhists in Canada and around the world welcome the arrival of May’s full moon to observe the holiest day of the Buddhist calendar. On the sacred occasion of Vesak, they come together to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and Nirvana of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.
“For millennia, the Buddha’s message has moved and shaped millions of lives for the better. Through his wisdom and the teachings of the Dharma, he has inspired countless people across generations to lead a life rooted in the values of compassion, peace and generosity. The story of his enlightenment remains a beacon of hope for Buddhists around the globe, providing with the wisdom and guidance to overcome suffering and achieve a life of perfect freedom.
“On Vesak, families and communities gather in the spirit of this inspiring legacy to give thanks and extend a helping hand to those in need. Through their devotion to the Buddha’s way of life, Buddhists have helped enrich and strengthen their communities here at home and all over the world.
“Vesak is also an opportunity for people of all faiths and backgrounds to reflect on the universal principles of compassion, charity and respect for one another. United behind these values, we can work together to build a better world for everyone.
“Today, as Buddhists gather in local temples for meaningful prayer and meditation, and as you reflect on the Buddha’s incredible life and sacred wisdom teachings, I hope this Vesak brings the strength and spiritual renewal you need to overcome any challenge.
“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, to all those celebrating, have a peaceful and joyful Vesak.”
