Mark Carney will be sworn in as prime minister this morning
Mark Carney will be sworn in as prime minister this morning, marking the official end of the Justin Trudeau era and ushering in new leadership of the federal government at a time of economic disruption and political instability.
Carney, who won the Liberal leadership election in a landslide victory less than a week ago, will take over with his new cabinet after they are sworn in by the Gov.-Gen. Mary Simon at Rideau Hall in a ceremony scheduled for 11 a.m.
The former central banker will be immediately thrust into dealing with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has initiated a trade war against Canada, while gearing up for a general election call that's widely anticipated within weeks.
He will be supported by a cabinet that's expected to be smaller than Trudeau's 37-person team, with eight ministers announcing they won't seek re-election, and several others being dropped or shuffled.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller, Procurement Minister Jean-Yves Duclos and Fisheries Minister Diane Lebouthillier will not be in Carney's cabinet.
Among Carney's former leadership rivals, Chrystia Freeland is expected to return to cabinet, though Karina Gould will not.
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly will remain in her role, while Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault will be shuffled to a different portfolio. Labour Minister Steve MacKinnon is also expected to remain in cabinet.
