COVID-19 Updates – April 24 2020
My office has a number of masks to offer for free to those in need upon request. Ten face masks can be provided per request per household in Ward 22 only once. To request face masks, please click here. Please note that due to the limited number of masks, requests are first-come, first-serve.
I will be hosting a teleconference over the coming weeks to help Ward 22’s schoolchildren and parents cope with staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. I will be joined by our trustees, educators and psychologists who will offer advice on home learning and maintaining mental and physical well-being. The teleconference will be held on May 1st, 2020 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. If you would like to join this teleconference, please sign up here.
VPI Working Solutions, in conjunction with Employment Ontario, will be hosting a free workshop on Tuesday, April 28, from 10am - 11:30am. This facilitated workshop will introduce basic facts about stress, anger, and anxiety disorders, as well as some strategies for dealing with them when navigating through the search for employment. The workshop will also offer tips to support mental health amid the COVID-19 pandemic. To register, please click here.

• The City of Toronto will be having a targeted spring cleanup across the City over the next few weeks. Spring cleanup tasks include:
o Illegal dumping cleanup;
o Boulevard and laneway cleaning;
o Litter and debris removal in parks;

• 3 of the 5 Private Long-Term Care homes which will receive assistance from the Canadian Armed Forces are in Toronto: Hawthorne Place, Eatonville Care Centre and Altamont Care.
• The City of Toronto is in the beginning stages of developing a post-pandemic restart and recovery plan.
o The plan will take a phased approach; the City will not restart all at once.
o When the City restarts depends on everyone’s actions. We must continue our collective efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Government of Ontario
• The Government of Ontario is partnering with the Federal Government to provide urgent relief for small businesses and landlords affected by the COVID-19 outbreak.
• The Province is committing $241 million through the new Ontario-Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance Program (OCECRA) - the total amount of provincial-federal relief is more than $900 million.
·The OCECRA will provide forgivable loans to eligible commercial property owners experiencing potential rent shortfalls because their small business tenants have been heavily impacted by the crisis
·To receive the loan, property owners will be required to reduce the rental costs for small business tenants for April, May and June 2020 by at least 75 per cent and commit to a moratorium on evictions for three months
·Smart Serve is offering free online Smart Serve Training for the month of April. This training is mandatory for those who want to legally serve alcohol in restaurants in Ontario and is usually offered for a fee. Space is very limited. Register today at: https://smartserve.ca/online-training/
Government of Canada
·The Federal Government announced the establishment of the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance.
o All Provinces and Territories have agreed to lower rent by 75% for small businesses that have been impacted by COVID19 for April, May and June.
o The Federal and Provincial/Territorial Governments will cover 50% of this reduction with the property owner covering the rest.
o Any small business owner paying less than $50,000 a month for rent is eligible for this assistance.
o This support is also available to all charities and non-profit organizations currently facing difficulties paying rent.
·There will be further announcements regarding rent support for larger businesses.
·The Federal Government has provided billions of dollars to provinces to increase pay for essential workers.
·The Prime Minister will be meeting with First Ministers to discuss reopening parts of the economy.
·Canada has received over six plane loads of carrying medical supplies from China since last Friday and over ten carriers have brought goods from China.
