Minister Ng met with Chinese business and community leaders to highlight government support measures for businesses amid COVID-19
COVID-19 has changed the way we live our lives and do business. To protect the health and safety of Canadians, and to save businesses and jobs, the Government of Canada is taking immediate, significant, and decisive action.
From introducing our Emergency Response Benefit that gives $2,000 to Canadians making under $1,000 a month, to our 75% wage subsidy to help businesses keep their teams together, to a variety of lending supports including a $40,000 interest-free loan, to reducing rent by 75% for small business owners, and much more – we’re there to help Canadian businesses.
This week, Mary Ng, Member of Parliament for Markham—Thornhill and Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade, met with Chinese-Canadian business leaders and community advocates to listen to their concerns, and to discuss how our government’s support measures can help them through this crisis.
On Monday, Minister Ng joined Minister Bardish Chagger, the Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth, as well as Members of Parliament from the Greater Toronto Area and Montreal region, to highlight our businesses supports. The group also discussed how our government is working with international partners to keep supply chains open and stable, creating stability for businesses during this uncertain time. MPs who participated include:
· Julie Dabrusin, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Heritage, MP for Toronto-Danforth
· Alexandra Mendès, Assistant Deputy Speaker of the House, MP, Brossard—Saint-Lambert
· Rob Oliphant, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, MP for Don Valley West
· Tony van Bynen, MP, Newmarket-Aurora
· Shaun Chen, MP, Scarborough North
· Han Dong, MP, Don Valley North

The group discussed the supports announced this week – the Regional Relief and Recovery Fundand extending the Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidyuntil end of August – and how government is going to be there for Canadian businesses every step of the way, into our economic restart and recovery.
For businesses that are seeking information on relevant supports, Minister Ng highlighted two online resources that the government has introduced to make it easier to find information, and to obtain a tailored list of relevant supports:
· Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Planprovides details about Canada’s action to support Canadians, and Canadian businesses facing hardship as a result of the pandemic.
· Business Benefits Finderis an interactive digital platform that brings together information on the latest COVID-related supports for businesses, and hundreds more. Visitors are advised which supports are available to them after responding to a few quick questions.
While COVID-19 is an unprecedented health and economic crisis, it has also unveiled an insidious and underlying current of racism that cannot go unchecked. At every opportunity, Minister Ng reiterated the government’s commitment to creating an open and inclusive society, one where racism and discrimination of any kind is unacceptable.
Throughout the discussions, Minister Ng emphasized the government’s continued commitment to support Canadians and our economy throughout the pandemic, no matter what it takes.
