Dear Ward 3 Residents,
Effective September 15, 2021, by signed letter addressed to the Clerk, Mayor Dave Barrow resigned as Mayor of the City of Richmond Hill. Council now has to decide how to fill the vacancy in the Office of Mayor for the remaining term of Council (until November 14,2022). There are two options:
Option 1 – By-election
If Council chooses to fill the vacancy by By-election, it is estimated that the costs of conducting the By-election will cost between $575,000 and $625,000. Nomination plus campaign period will take approximately 70-90 days and Voting Day would be 45 days after Nomination Day (between January 2022 to March 2022).
Option 2 – Appoint a current Member of Council to fill the Vacancy
Appointing a current Member of Council to fill the vacancy in the Office of Mayor could occur within four to six weeks.
