Councillor Jim Karygiannis: COVID-19 Updates – March 31, 2020
During this difficult time, I have heard concerns regarding attempted car break-ins. Please remember to lock your cars, even if you are stepping away from your vehicle for only a short period of time. DO NOT leave any valuables inside. Park your car in your garage to further minimize the chances of car theft.
I will be hosting a teleconference for members of the community on Friday, April 3rd at 7:00 PM along with MP Jean Yip and MPP Aris Babikian. There is a limited number of spaces available on this teleconference; if you are interested, please click hereif you would like to join in. Participation will be based on a first-come, first-serve basis.
City of Toronto
· City of Toronto facilities will continue to be closed until further notice, including non-emergency City child care facilities in schools.
· City-operated programs will also continue to be cancelled.
· The TTC will be moving buses onto busier routes to manage the issue of overcrowding.
· The following events have been cancelled through to June 30th, 2020:
o All City-led major events, festivals, conferences, and cultural programs;
o All City permits issued for major events organized by external groups at Civic centres, squares, parks, public spaces including road closures, City-operated museums and cultural centres; and,
o The Annual Pride Parade.
· The following City-operated environmental/energy initiatives have been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak:
- Clean Toronto Together - cancelled
- Live Green Toronto outreach and events – cancelled
- Live Green Toronto Volunteers – suspended
- Smart Commute Toronto – suspended
- Eco-Roof Incentive Program – there may be a delay in processing applications
- Home Energy Loan Program – there may be a delay in processing applications
- Waste Reduction Community Grants – there will be a delay in processing applications
- Energy Retrofit Loan program – there may be a delay in processing applications and setting up site visits
- Navigation Support Services – site visits will be postponed
· The Toronto District School Board is moving ahead with plans to connect teachers with students and/or their parents/guardians beginning Monday, April 6, 2020.
o To help students stay connected and to support remote learning, the TDSB is lending internet-enabled devices to families who do not have access to devices. In order to apply for one of these devices, please fill out the following form as soon as possible: Device and Internet Availability Form

COVID-19 - March 31, 2020 UPDATES
Provincial
· The province is issuing a new directive on health and safety standards for frontline hospital nurses in hospitals:
o The directive is as follows:
§ Precautions for interactions with suspected, presumed or confirmed cases of COVID-19 patients
§ Point-of-care risk assessments for every patient interaction to assess appropriate health and safety measures
§ Training on safe use of all personal protective equipment (PPE)
· The govt. of Ontario has extended the Declaration of Emergency and associated emergency measures to April 13, 2020
· Ontario is closing, effective immediately, all outdoor recreational amenities including but not limited to playgrounds, sports fields, basketball and tennis courts, off-leash dog parks, beaches, skateboard and BMX parks, picnic areas, outdoor community gardens, park shelters, outdoor exercise equipment, condo parks and gardens, and other outdoor recreational amenities
o Green spaces in parks, trails, ravines and conservation areas that aren't otherwise closed would remain open for walkthrough access but individuals must remain physical distancing
· The govt. of Ontario is easing the financial burden on students and making sure they can complete their studies during temporarily deferring payments for OSAP loans and making online learning supports, including year-end exams, available to post-secondary institutions
o Loan repayments will be subject to a six-month interest-free moratorium until September 30, 2020 Students may still make payments if they wish via online banking and payments during this period will go entirely towards their loan principal
o Ontario has finalized an agreement with ecampusOntario to make digital learning supports available to post-secondary institutions
· The province is also distributing $25 million in additional funding to publicly assisted colleges, universities and indigenous institutes to address each institution's needs
· Ontario govt. has announced that schools and child care centres will remain closed
· To ensure continuity of learning, Ontario is launching the second phase of Learn at Home, the online learning tool created for students from JK to Grade 12 to use
o Public schools will remain closed to teachers until May 1, 2020 and to students until May 4, (closure may be extended if necessary)
· Private schools, licensed child care centres and EarlyON programs will also remain closed until April 13, 2020
· No student will have their graduation compromised by COVID-19 and the Ministry of Education are ensuring there will be no barriers in accessing post-secondary education
Government of Canada
· The federal government has signed contracts with Canadian companies, Thornhill Medical, Medicom and Spartan Bioscience, to produce medical supplies, such as ventilators, surgical masks and test kits.
· The federal government is dedicating $2 billion towards purchasing protective personal equipment (PPE) such as masks, face shield, gowns, ventilators, test kits, swabs, and hand sanitizer. Shipments will be arriving in the coming days to provide supplies for front line workers.
· Canadians are reminded to practice physical distancing and to stay home unless they are an essential worker. This upcoming week is crucial in the fight against COVID19.
· Federal Minister Miller is working closely with northern and Indigenous communities to provide support.
