Organizing Committee Co-Chair Alexandra Ngan expressed gratitude to support and encouragement of the media and public for CCL. “The theme for this year, ‘Change with Change to Succeed’, is taken from a well-known TV Series: Limelight Years. The opening dialog of that series says, ‘If life were a stage, that stage would be full of traps. At any moment, actors and actresses walking on stage could be snared and could fall down, but if they don’t give up, any one of them could have a chance to turn their life around to be a beautiful success story” she says. “That is the purpose of the CCL Organizing Committee: Through the selection of Chinese Canadian Legends who have extraordinary achievements and contributions to the community, we want to encourage everyone to rise above challenges and change with change to succeed in the face of adversity.”
Co-chair Mr. Dennis Au-Yeung says that this is the 17th year of the Chinese Canadian Legend Award and the Committee appeals to everyone to support this meaningful event by nominating role models in our community. He also believes that many legendary figures have yet to be honoured among Chinese Canadians around the world, and the goal of the CCL is to recognize their achievements, and share their inspiring stories with future generations.
Nomination Committee Chair Mr. Stanley Kwan says that nominations are open to anyone, regardless of position, gender, age, or how rich or poor they are, as long as the nominee agrees to be nominated. The Committee will consider nominees' personal struggles to succeed despite adversary conditions, their fearless and courageous spirit, achievements, contributions, and their motivating impact on their friends and the community.
The Award and book collection have providedinspiration and motivation for change in the community. Mr. Bammy Wong says the books have also become invaluable reference for ongoing research on Chinese Canadian immigrants, and are being collected by the prestigious Richard Charles Lee Canada-Hong Kong Library at the University of Toronto, and the libraries of University of Ottawa, University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and University of Victoria.
Mr. Stephen Siu, Honorary Chair of the Editorial Committee, says, “The Chinese Canadian Legend awards sets itself apart from other awards, in that a book about the recipients is published every year. With the donation of the annual edition to prestigious universities in Canada, the book collection has become an invaluable reference for scholars and students.”
