Markham-Unionville MPP Michael Chan Honours Four Exceptional Women and Girls
MPP Michael Chan celebrated International Women’s Week by recognizing four women and girls in Markham-Unionville for their leadership in improving the lives of others in our community.
In its 11th year, Ontario’s Leading Women, Leading Girls, Building Communities Awards have recognized more than 745 exceptional women and girls across the province who have demonstrated leadership and improved the lives of others through their work, activism or volunteer activities.
This year’s recipients from Markham-Unionville are:
Ingrid Taheri – recognized for her remarkable contributions in advancing public understanding and awareness of mental illness through her non-profit organization, High Notes Avante Productions Inc., which organizes events that entertain as they educate the public about mental illness.
Nusrat Sacranie – recognized for her remarkable contributions at the Islamic Foundation of Toronto in support of girls’ education and dedication to academic excellence and mentorship.
Safa Warsi – recognized for her remarkable contributions at the Islamic Foundation of Toronto as founder of various school clubs, including the Model United Nations and Leadership Team, her work as a peer tutor, and her contributions in support of Syrian refugees.
Shiraz Masroor – recognized for her remarkable contributions to the Islamic Foundation of Toronto as a volunteer for funeral services, the hot soup kitchen, Ramadhan preparations, and a wide range of other community events. Shiraz also contributes to the Hilal Welfare Trust and the Muslim Welfare Centre.
Celebrating the achievements of women and girls is part of the government's four-part plan to build Ontario up by investing in people's talents and skills, building new public infrastructure like roads and transit, creating a dynamic, supportive environment where business thrives, and building a secure savings plan so everyone can afford to retire.

March 8 has been recognized as International Women’s Day around the world since 1977. The annual celebration highlights women’s economic, political and social achievements.
The Leading Women, Leading Girls, Building Communities Recognition Program honours girls under the age of 18 and women 18 years and older.
Since its launch in 2006, more than 745 women and girls across Ontario have been recognized for their community leadership contributions.
